人何為需要練【氣】？什麼又是氣呢？氣，是人體進行一切生命活動的動能，隨著氣的正常流動，人體達到一個好的狀態，中醫稱之“平和”。氣可分為與生俱來的父母贈予的先天之氣，以及與後天隨著人逐漸成長，而形成的後天之氣。若將人比喻為一棵樹，先天之氣即是樹的種子，後天之氣則是蘊含養分的土壤，藉由先天之氣來吸收後天之氣的能量，來保持健康的狀態。先天之氣主要使人傳承生命，後天之氣則是鞏固人生命的健康狀態，練習太極拳可以保護、強健先天之氣，亦可使後天之氣源源不絕，太極講究人體陰陽變動與平衡，藉由氣的流動來體現，因此可以達到練氣的效果。現代人多有久坐，熬夜等不良的生活習慣，都使身體長期處於過勞的狀態，藉由練氣，可以平衡生活中累積的疲勞，以及長久來及的慢性傷害，使身心更加的舒適，進而達到長壽的效果。
